Making Money Working

It was a nice idea. Today the unemployment rate is hovering above 9 percent—better than it would have been without the stimulus, most experts agree, but still painfully high. Why didn’t we get more for our money?

While liberals and conservatives alike blame the stimulus itself—It wasn’t big enough! It was never going to work!—the problem may have more to do with how the money was spent. It’s not enough just to inject money into infrastructure, because not all transportation funding is created equal—or at least, it doesn’t create jobs at an equal rate. As any infrastructure policy wonk can tell you, money spent on fixing up existing systems or building mass transit delivers more jobs, and faster, than building new highways. With their wallets bulging with their federal allowance, the states were allowed to spend $26.6 billion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money however they saw fit.

A new study shows that most states didn’t end up making the most of the windfall. The report by the transportation research group Smart Growth America found that states spent more than a third of the money on building new roads—rather than working on public transportation and fixing up existing roads and bridges. The result of the indiscriminate spending? States missed out on potentially thousands of new jobs—and bridges, roads, and overpasses around the country are still crumbling. Meanwhile, the states that did put dollars toward public transportation were richly rewarded: Each dollar used on transit was 75 percent more effective at putting people to work than a dollar used for highway work.

The government meant to get the biggest bang for its buck, with “shovel-ready projects.” But building miles of new roads requires planning, land acquisition, and other lengthy steps that put fewer workers on the job immediately.

The government, of course, meant to get the biggest bang for its buck. The stimulus bill forced states to spend their allocated cash quickly, which was intended to get them to fund maintenance needs—“shovel-ready projects”—that had already been identified. Building miles of new roads, on the other hand, requires planning, land acquisition, and other lengthy steps that put fewer workers on the job immediately.

Some states did that. Sue Minter, Vermont’s deputy transportation secretary, says a longstanding “fix-it-first” policy for infrastructure and bipartisan collaboration shaped Vermont’s decisions about how to use the funds. The state spent all of its highway money on system maintenance, with a small amount going to mass transit. (Minter, a Democrat, was a member of the state legislature at the time.) “This shot of money into our economy was very, very significant. It’s part of the reason we have a relatively low unemployment rate,” she says. Only 5.8 percent of Vermont residents are out of work, one of the nation’s lowest rates. State research shows that ARRA funding employed 11,000 people—a small number overall, but a significant one in a small state. Minter says the maintenance was important for keeping economic growth, particularly in tourism, strong.

Other states, however, took a different tack. Arkansas used 81 percent of its money for new projects and none on transit; it also has a higher unemployment rate than Vermont. And unlike other states near the bottom of the list, just 38 percent of its roads are in good condition, according to a report by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, a trade organization.

Are you a homeowner who is facing foreclosure? If you are, you may literally be desperate. You may try anything to save your home. Of course, you are urged to do so, but it is important to not let desperation get in the way. Homeowners who do often find themselves the victims of a foreclosure scam.

When it comes to foreclosure scams, the best way to protect yourself is to know what to look for. Although foreclosure scams come in a number of different formats, many are easy to spot.

One type of scam that you will be on the lookout for is when an individual or a company approaches you offering to help. When doing so, they will offer to provide you with a loan. The only problem is that a loan is not what you may be getting. The documents you sign may actually turn over ownership to the individual or company in question. However, you often end up agreeing to rent the property at a very high rate. When you cannot afford to make those payments, you will be evicted from a home that you no longer own.

Another foreclosure scam involves having an individual or company coming to your rescue. They will offer to negotiate with your lender for you. During this period, you are asked to pay the individual or company in question, which may be referred to as a rescuer. The only problem is that individual or company isn't in contact with your mortgage lender at all. What they are doing is pocketing your money and you will still end up facing foreclosure.

Similar to the foreclosure scam listed above is one that involves strong-arming your home from you. In this aspect, the individual or company in question isn't necessarily after your money, but more your property. They will instruct you not to contact anyone for help, aside from them. You are instructed not to speak with a lawyer, not to talk to or make payments to your mortgage company, and so forth. Right before the foreclosure proceedings start, the scammer will then take every step possible to get your home.

One mistake that you will not want to make, concerning foreclosure scams is believing that the individual in front of you is different. Desperation and despair can cloud one's judgment. If you are presented with a contract or legal document to sign, do not do so until you can have it reviewed by an attorney. Be sure to choose your own attorney. Do not rely on the advice of an attorney suggested to you, as they may be in on the scam, if they are even a real attorney to begin with.

The three above mentioned foreclosure scams are just a few that you may run into, but they do have the potential to cause the most damage and the most heartbreak. The good news is you now know what to look for. This means you can avoid falling victim to these types of scams. As a word to the wise, never agree to do business with someone who approaches you. A reputable lawyer or housing advisor will wait for you to come to them. No one who comes knocking on your doorstep is likely to have your best interests at heart.

As a recap, foreclosure scams are out there. Typically, the only way for you to legally avoid foreclosure to speak with an attorney or to make arrangements with your financial lender.

Make Making Money

Clearly, the people at NBC have it wrong, but it is not just because they have missed the obvious.  It is, I suspect, because, as part of the liberal culture, those who control the national media believe that equality of outcomes is more important than overall prosperity.  Given the choice between a nation with an average GDP of $100,000 per year, unequally distributed, and a nation with GDP of $20,000 for all, a liberal would choose the latter.  As long as one member of society is driving a Rolls-Royce or sipping Johnny Walker Blue Label on his hundred-foot yacht, no liberal can sleep at night.  What's more, no liberal could ever admit that yacht-owners like Larry Elisson or Paul Allen are the ones who have really made a difference.

Yesterday, we witnessed awesomeness. Even though the World Heavyweight and WWE Championship matches were good, they weren't as good as I thought they could be. But that's okay, because the ending to both of those matches were both brilliant and exciting.

For the World Heavyweight Championship match, Edge beat Dolph Ziggler after hitting the "banned" spear on Ziggler while the referee and Vickie were down and out. Edge pulled an Eddie Guerrero, and well, he cheated. After hitting the spear, he acted as if he was unconscious and got up and hit the unprettier on Dolph Ziggler to get the victory by pin-fall.

Later that night, Alberto Del Rio eliminated Santino Marella to win his first ever Royal Rumble. This was definitely a great move by WWE because Del Rio has tremendous in ring and mic skills, and in my opinion, he was the most deserving in that Rumble match.

Anyways, rumour has it that Edge is going to face Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship on the grandest stage of them all, Wrestlemania.

This seems like a money match, but how about WWE makes it way more interesting. Why not have Christian in that match, too, and make it a triple-threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship?

Even though Vince McMahon doesn't see it, Christian's always been someone that the WWE Universe wants in the main event scene. He has charisma, in-ring talent and a huge fan following.

He has charisma, in-ring talent and a huge fan following.

personal finance blog

Admission to my own personal guilt in not sharing this business with internet folk earlier, I decided to bring to you a bit of 'eye candy', with a huge side order of 'red flag' to boot. Today, I will show you Paybox.me, a mysterious company making search engine progress, using folks for their marketing efforts, and why you shouldn't deal with them.

This company, a payment processing venture that aims to be the 'biggest processing company on the internet', remains in total secrecy from all of its 270,000 users. Searching Whois yields a Webguard, which blocks all of their user information from being visible. If I was anything of an aspiring future company, I would not want to hide myself from potential investors, buyers, or agencies that may help me grow.

Moreover, this company cannot be reached via email.  We know of only 2 known emails that work (we tried all @paybox.me possibilities) - admin@ and news@.  Of course, you will not get replies from them.  And, they block commentary on their website blog posts.  No customer service.  Yet somehow, they can afford to place $20 a day in the accounts of 270,000 active users.  Since their website doesn't say a thing about 'Paybox Currency' or 'Paybox Bucks', this company is claiming a world known currency by giving out Dollars.  Wish I had money like that to share so flagrantly.

They plan to soon 'Open The Box' by offering digital products from merchants that - you guessed it - are invisible.  Website currently has a voting mechanism where you can vote where to spend this Paybox balance you have, with some of their top vote draws being eBay, Amazon, Walmart and Tiger Direct.  Not sure about you, but I will not accept the business from a company that cannot be identified, in a currency that they claim to be 'autonomous'.

Coding Horror: Trouble In the House of Google: If these dime-store scrapers were doing so well and generating so much traffic on the back of our content – how was the rest of the web faring? My enduring faith in the gravitational constant of Google had been shaken.... I can't help noticing that we're not the only site to have serious problems with Google search results in the last few months.... Anecdotally, my personal search results have also been noticeably worse lately. As part of Christmas shopping for my wife, I searched for "iPhone 4 case" in Google. I had to give up completely on the first two pages of search results as utterly useless, and searched Amazon instead.

People whose opinions I respect have all been echoing the same sentiment -- Google, the once essential tool, is somehow losing its edge. The spammers, scrapers, and SEO'ed-to-the-hilt content farms are winning.

Like any sane person, I'm rooting for Google in this battle, and I'd love nothing more than for Google to tweak a few algorithmic knobs and make this entire blog entry moot. Still, this is the first time since 2000 that I can recall Google search quality ever declining, and it has inspired some rather heretical thoughts in me -- are we seeing the first signs that algorithmic search has failed as a strategy? Is the next generation of search destined to be less algorithmic and more social?

It's a scary thing to even entertain, but maybe gravity really is broken...

Vivek Wadhwa:

Why We Desperately Need a New (and Better) Google: This semester, my students at the School of Information at UC-Berkeley researched the VC system from the perspective of company founders. We prepared a detailed survey; randomly selected 500 companies from a venture database; and set out to contact the founders. Thanks to Reid Hoffman, we were able to get premium access to LinkedIn—which was very helpful and provided a wealth of information.  But some of the founders didn’t have LinkedIn accounts, and others didn’t respond to our LinkedIn “inmails”. So I instructed my students to use Google searches to research each founder’s work history, by year, and to track him or her down in that way.

But it turns out that you can’t easily do such searches in Google any more. Google has become a jungle: a tropical paradise for spammers and marketers. Almost every search takes you to websites that want you to click on links that make them money, or to sponsored sites that make Google money. There’s no way to do a meaningful chronological search.

We ended up using instead a web-search tool called Blekko. It’s a new technology and is far from perfect; but it is innovative and fills the vacuum of competition with Google (and Bing).

Blekko was founded in 2007 by Rich Skrenta, Tom Annau, Mike Markson, and a bunch of former Google and Yahoo engineers. Previously, Skrenta had built Topix and what has become Netscape’s Open Directory Project. For Blekko, his team has created a new distributed computing platform to crawl the web and create search indices. Blekko is backed by notable angels, including Ron Conway, Marc Andreessen, Jeff Clavier, and Mike Maples....

In addition to providing regular search capabilities like Google’s, Blekko allows you to define what it calls “slashtags” and filter the information you retrieve according to your own criteria. Slashtags are mostly human-curated sets of websites built around a specific topic, such as health, finance, sports, tech, and colleges.  So if you are looking for information about swine flu, you can add “/health” to your query and search only the top 70 or so relevant health sites rather than tens of thousands spam sites.  Blekko crowdsources the editorial judgment for what should and should not be in a slashtag, as Wikipedia does.  One Blekko user created a slashtag for 2100 college websites.  So anyone can do a targeted search for all the schools offering courses in molecular biology, for example. Most searches are like this—they can be restricted to a few thousand relevant sites. The results become much more relevant and trustworthy when you can filter out all the garbage.

The feature that I’ve found most useful is the ability to order search results.  If you are doing searches by date, as my students were, Blekko allows you to add the slashtag “/date” to the end of your query and retrieve information in a chronological fashion. Google does provide an option to search within a date range, but these are the dates when website was indexed rather than created; which means the results are practically useless. Blekko makes an effort to index the page by the date on which it was actually created (by analyzing other information embedded in its HTML).  So if I want to search for articles that mention my name, I can do a regular search; sort the results chronologically; limit them to tech blog sites or to any blog sites for a particular year; and perhaps find any references related to the subject of economics. Try doing any of this in Google or Bing

The problem is that content on the internet is growing exponentially and the vast majority of this content is spam. This is created by unscrupulous companies that know how to manipulate Google’s page-ranking systems to get their websites listed at the top of your search results. When you visit these sites, they take you to the websites of other companies that want to sell you their goods. (The spammers get paid for every click.) This is exactly what blogger Paul Kedrosky found when trying to buy a dishwasher. He wrote about how he began Googleing for information…and Googleing…and Googleing. He couldn’t make head or tail of the results. Paul concluded that the “the entire web is spam when it comes to major appliance reviews”.

Blogging has become a very popular fun activity for many people in the world who are connected to the internet. Surprisingly, one of the most commonly blogged about topics is money. We all have to deal with it and a lot of people want to do better with their money, so money has become a very popular topic for web logging. Here are some tips on how you can create your own blog about money and how to grow it. We are assuming in this article that you know already how to make use of blogging software and can actually get it up. This article is to help you promote your blog and draw more visitors over time.

One of the best things you can do is comment on other people's web logs. There is a community of personal finance writers around, so write comments and add to the conversation on other people's blogs. If they like what you have to say they might visit your blog and become a regular reader. It's surprising how many people will visit your blog based off the comments you post.

Get listed on pfblogs.com. Personal Finance Blogs is a website which aggregates all of the personal finance news that people post about every day. If your site is listed on there you will automatically have free publicity!

Write about topics that haven't been done. There are millions of posts about making use of Roth IRA's in order to save money, but how many are there that compare dieting to one's personal finance? Think of topics which are a bit off the beaten path, new and innovative content will draw in readers.

Link to other bloggers and their specific articles. Every professional financial blogger has really decent traffic statistics and know where their visitors came from. If you are sending a lot of traffic to someone else's website they will most probably link back to your site! Create a blogroll on your website and link to your list of favorite other bloggers.

Participate in blog carnivals. Blog carnivals are a way for the personal finance community to submit their best articles for the week and show them off to the personal finance community. This is a great way to get a lot of publicity for your blog.

Finally, you have to have patience. You won't have a huge readership overnight. It takes a good year of blogging before you are able to get an AdSense check every month. Start writing about things you like and be persistent!
