Making Money Scam

A new scam is spreading rapidly across Facebook, using rogue applications to post spam messages onto users' profiles claiming to be a way of discovering the total number of times your Facebook profile has been viewed.

The following YouTube video explains more:

Tens of thousands of users have been tricked into clicking on the messages.

My total facebook views are: XXXX

Find out your total profile views [LINK]

The number of "views" shown each time changes, and there are a number of different links being used, but all of them point to rogue applications which trick you into allowing them to access your Facebook page and profile:

And as soon as you click on "allow", the scammers have you by the short-and-curlies. Behind the scenes, they are already posting messages which can be seen by your Facebook friends.

Plenty of people may want to know how many times their Facebook profile has been viewed (some may regard it as a badge of honour, rather like collecting followers on Twitter, or connections on LinkedIn) but this application is making the number up.

How do I know? Well, the test account I used to research this particular rogue application is friends with no-one, and isn't found in a Facebook search. I hardly think that it's true that it's been viewed over 3645 times..

But, of course, if your friends see "you" posting a message like that on Facebook they may well be tempted to find out their score for veiwers themselves, and click on the link and approve the application. And thus the rogue application spreads virally across Facebook.

So, what's the intention of all this? Well, if you do allow the rogue app to access your profile and post to your Facebook page then you'll next be taken to the webpage which claims it will calculate the number of people who have viewed your profile.

But first, they want you to complete a survey.

The scammers make money every time one of these surveys is completed. They're simply using the draw of a mythical Facebook view count to lure in the unwary and get as many people as possible to click on their links and take their surveys.

If you've been affected by this scam, you should clean up your account before any further damage is done.

I've made a YouTube video where I show you how to clean-up your Facebook account if you were hit by this, or similar scams on Facebook:

(Enjoy this video? You can check out more on the SophosLabs YouTube channel and subscribe if you like)

Make sure that you stay informed about the latest scams spreading fast across Facebook and other internet attacks. Join the Sophos Facebook page, where more than 50,000 people regularly share information on threats and discuss the latest security news.

While accessing the internet, you will find and run into many, in fact too many, 'too good to be true' deals. You will find expired coupon sites that are built to simply get traffic 'hits', harvest information, or simply to scam customers out of the truth, or more importantly, out of savings.

Then in steps Jan Leasure, what I coin as today's 'Mother Teresa' of online coupons, recipes and information. A graduate of Northern Illinois University with a Master's Degree, Jan is a famed syndicated columnist for $uper $aver, the premier online coupon saving mega blog. With a clean, colorful look and a growing user base, Jan contributes tips, recalls, ideas and her heart to the matter of saving you money at the register.

So you ask, "Well, there is Groupon and such other savings sites. Why her?"

Well, Groupon is commercialized and lacks the love and attention Jan puts into her work. Besides, could anyone have gone into a grocery store, and literally walked out of the store with $800 worth of food and supplies...AND collected $75 at the register? I think not. That takes a special, angelic woman who has a sharper eye than most, and detail ten times more powerful than a microscope.

$uper $aver 'blogsite' is masterful in both simplistic design and easy of use. Offering a fast load time, you can quickly find and navigate through tips, wonderful recipes, articles and up to date information on food and other product recalls. Topping it off is the fact that Jan is actually an extremely successful senior mortgage loan officer out of Illinois who dedicates her extra time in her blog so you can save money in these economically oppressing times. Now that is a true, full time 'trooper.'

Trust $uper $aver Jan with all of your coupon needs, questions and tips and let her assist you in making a dollar stretch for you and your family. This blog is just the perfect starting, and stopping point, to end any question as to how you can save.

online reputation management Vs reputation repair

When businesses or persons fall prey to unfair rivals, irate ex-employees or disgruntled buyers, then a SERM becomes important from the financial survival of the enterprise.

Firms like SERMs are very important in sustaining, and in some circumstances salvaging and restoring companies or person's popularity and fantastic title.

Via the internet searches are a single from the first things that modern day day consumes do prior to shelling out moolah having a small business or person, and a single lousy click can signify financial disaster for a corporation, particularly in this ever increasing cyber economic system. Reputation for these SERMs are escalating by leaps and bounds using the realization it is not prudent to attempt to conduct online business on this cyber age and never have a SERM on retainer alongside your accountant and your lawyer.

Businesses are also appreciating the collateral benefit of acquiring a Popularity Management agency on-board as an integral part of their online business design, its terrific promoting! Although securing a company's excellent status and title on-line, it generates very good press and optimistic publicity that finally adds appreciably to your bottom line of the company's balance sheet, making the services to literally pay out for alone in many conditions.

This tends to become an extremely powerful offering point for corporations too as people, to understand that they're cleansing and defending their reputations and cyber photos, whilst simultaneously working an extremely reliable advertising initiative. Sometimes suppliers absolutely disregard their former marketing efforts on the internet and opt for the advantages of On the net Reputation Management.

Acquiring a SERM firm in your facet is without having a doubt the way to go in this cyber age. For additional specifics on online reputation management and corporate reputation management, Please visit us at http://removeripoffreports.net/

"Should I stay or should I go? - If you say that you are mine - I'll be here till the end of time - But you gotta let me know - Should I stay or should I go?"

—The Clash, "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?"

Nebraska fans are set for another round of uncertainty, as current LSU coach Les Miles has announced he will meet with administrators at Michigan to discuss becoming the next head Wolverine. Miles, a former Michigan player, has strong ties to his alma mater and many sites are reporting that he is seriously considering making the move.

Should Miles leave Baton Rouge for Ann Arbor, Nebraska coach Bo Pelini will likely be on the short list of candidates to replace him. And a move to LSU certainly has more substance than the rumors of Pelini taking the job in Miami, as was rumored last month. So would Pelini pack up and head back to the bayou?

There would certainly be some incentives to do so. Between Nick Saban and Les Miles, LSU has become a national force in recruiting. Louisiana itself is a hotbed of football talent, and LSU gets first pick of that talent in the way rivaled only by Texas. If Pelini wanted a situation where he could load up quickly, LSU would be attractive.

Pelini would be a familiar face in Baton Rouge, having been the defensive coordinator there from 2005-07 and being part of a national championship team. Pelini would have a familiarity both with the area and the competition in the SEC.

It’s been less than a week since the Verizon iPhone was announced, and not surprisingly, it looks like the tech world is already hungry for Apple’s next major products.

Over the past few days, details on Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 and iPad 2 have begun leaking, including reports of fast dual-core processors, as well as a higher resolution display on the iPad 2 to complement the iPhone 4’s Retina Display.

We’ve been hearing about blazing dual-core processors like Nvidia’s Tegra 2 on Android phones, so it’s to be expected that Apple would follow suit for its next-generation phone and tablet. Engadget says that Apple’s new dual core processor, which will likely be called the A5 (the successor to the A4 in the iPhone 4 and iPad), spits out huge 1080p high-definition files “like running water.” Meanwhile, AppleInsider is reporting that it will also sport dual graphics processing cores — something that even powerful upcoming Android phones don’t feature.

Basically, we can expect the iPhone 5, iPad 2, and even the next iteration of the slim Apple TV, all of which would run the new A5 processor, to be faster than any Apple mobile devices we’ve seen before. That means they’ll support even more graphically impressive games than the likes of Infinity Blade, which is currently a shining achievement of what’s possible with the iPhone 4 and iPad’s current hardware. The next Apple TV will likely gain support for 1080p video as well — the current model can only play 720p HD video.

The faster CPU will likely be put to good use in the iPad 2, which AppleInsider says could sport a massively high-resolution display. The 10-inch iPad 2 could potentially feature a display running at 2048 by 1536 pixels, the site says. In comparison, many 24-inch monitors today feature resolutions of around 1920 by 1200 pixels (around the size of 1080p videos). Such a high resolution in a 10-inch display is unheard of today — but if any company could make it happen, it’s Apple. Even if the iPad 2 doesn’t reach the heights AppleInsider is predicting, you can definitely expect it to be higher than the current iPad’s 1024 by 768 pixel display.

Surprisingly, Engadget reports that the iPad 2 will also feature an SD card slot, which would allow users to plug in SD memory cards for additional memory. SD card expandability is something Android phones and tablets currently tout, but such an addition is completely out of character for Apple, which would much rather have consumers pay more money initially for bigger amounts of unexpandable storage.

Apple will change things up when it comes to network chipsets in the iPhone 5 and iPad 2 as well. According to Engadget, the iPad 2 will sport a Qualcomm chipset that can run on both GSM and CDMA networks, which would make it compatible on both AT&T and Verizon. The iPhone 5, on the other hand, will feature a Qualcomm chipset for GSM, CDMA, and UMTS networks, making it compatible with every mobile carrier at the moment. There’s no LTE 4G on the horizon yet for the devices, which means we likely won’t see it on Apple devices until 2012.

The iPad 2 is reportedly on track to land in stores in April, while the iPhone 5 is still set for the summer.

personal finance programs

A Pennsylvania startup Viridity Energy drew a series B investment of $14 million from Braemar Energy Ventures and Intel Capital, the company reported today.

Founded in 2008, Viridity Energy offers “distributed demand management software, systems and services,” that can turn very energy-consuming businesses into producers and sellers of power back to the grid. Viridity’s technology can also help companies get paid to control and reduce their energy consumption.

The company’s customers to-date have been retailers, hospitals, universities and various military and government agencies. In Philadelphia, Viridity set up systems for the transit authority (SEPTA) that capture energy released by braking, electric subway trains, and store it in rail-side battery arrays, routing the power back through the third rail to reuse it for trains’ acceleration.

Yep, electricity can be recycled.

SEPTA reported that the project cut expenditures directly. It also allowed SEPTA to get credits and incentives from the regional power authority for decreasing energy use during peak hours, and in general. The company plans to bring similar systems to other cities and transit systems in the U.S. this year.

Viridity Energy’s chief executive and president Audrey Zibelman said on Tuesday:

“We’re moving from an [energy] industry dominated by large-scale generation where customers are passive to one where customers are active in what they consume, and what they produce. First, there were personal computers. Now we’re going to personal energy.”

Her company plans to work as a “technology agnostic, market enabler,” she said. Its focus near term is to develop more, “micro-grids” in the northeastern U.S., California and Texas — all regions with aggressive goals to switch from hydrocarbon to renewable energy sources, or to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Its new-found capital will go towards hiring technical and sales talent to get new projects going, Zibelman said. Her company will also continue to build partnerships with other smart-grid and distributed energy players, such as the manufacturers of control systems, or banks and energy programs that finance solar, storage and power generation assets.

On Monday, I linked to this op-ed from Tom Esvlin, Vermont's "stimulus czar," lamenting the way the money got spent. "Although I'd like to think Vermont did better than many states, much of the money ended up continuing bloated programs rather than providing a transition to a sustainable future," he wrote. That same day, Brookings' Gary Burtless e-mailed in a rebuttal that's worth quoting at length, as it's a very clear description of where the stimulus funds actually went, and why such a small percentage was directly devoted to building things. So here it is, with some edits for space:

The main problem with that silly op-ed is that it refers to only a small slice of the actual federal spending on stimulus authorized by the Feb. 2009 legislation. So far, the overwhelming share of that stimulus has been devoted to three items: Tax cuts for households; direct benefits to people adversely affected by the severe recession, mostly the unemployed or poor; and fiscal relief to state and local governments. Vermont did not need any "Czar" to receive or administer funds under these programs. The money for them quickly left the U.S. Treasury without any effort on the part of the Czar who penned this highly misleading op-ed piece. People in Vermont *directly* received benefits from the stimulus as: (1) lower federal tax withholding from their paychecks; (2) extended unemployment benefits; (3) premium subsidies so they could maintain their health insurance after they were laid off from a job in which they received health protection; (4) miscellaneous benefits (e.g., for college costs) under one provision or another; and (5) aid from the Treasury that permitted Vermont and its localities to finance their Medicaid and K-12 education programs without hiking taxes or lowering other public spending. The kinds of infrastructure spending for which the WSJ's "Czar" had some responsibility constituted a small percentage of the stimulus the Congress authorized for 2009 and 2010.

In FY 2009 and 2010, the EXPECTED spending on infrastructure and other items for which the Vermont “Czar” may have had partial responsibility accounted for just 11% of anticipated spending under the stimulus legislation. The other 89% had nothing to do with the programs criticized by Vermont’s supposed Czar. Thus, all of his complaints – even if justified – are essentially irrelevant to the programs mainly supported by the stimulus law … at least so far. Obviously, in the years 2011-2019, that kind of stimulus spending would have accounted for a vastly larger share of outlays. But (and perhaps Vermont’s Czar has not kept up with this because he does not read a daily paper) the Congress just passed and the President just signed ANOTHER stimulus program consisting of more than 90% personal and business tax cuts and less than 10% extensions in unemployment benefits. So far as I know, very little additional spending has been authorized for those hated infrastructure / technology investment projects. Below is the CBO’s year-by-year analysis of the spending authorized under the Feb. 2009 stimulus law:

My own private view is that the country would probably have been better off if *MORE* of the original stimulus had been devoted to infrastructure / technology investment (more of it would have been spent on goods and services produced in the U.S. rather than China, East Asia, and Europe). Setting aside that consideration for a minute, what infuriates me about the piece cited in your blog is that it reinforces the very widespread but totally erroneous impression that Congress and the Administration were unaware of the administrative hurdles to fast spending that the “Czar” points out in his op-ed. Those hurdles were understood from the very beginning, which is precisely the reason that infrastructure/technology investment projects constituted such a small percentage of the total package. It is perfectly legitimate to criticize the pace of spending on these projects, but it is utterly deranged to think that the slow rate of spending on the projects constitutes a serious indictment of the spending authorized under the Feb. 2009 stimulus program. Very little of the expected spending under the stimulus program (at least so far) was supposed to be devoted to those projects.

manage personal finances

I’ve spent hours of my life toiling over virtual cities in Maxis’ Sim City series, and it must have rubbed off after all these years. I still enjoy meticulously planning infrastructure, zoning and carefully tweaking finances to this day.

The other day whilst trying to work, I accidentally (oops) went looking for some online heirs to the Sim City throne. Despite simple Flash games lacking the depth of even the original Sim City, I guessed there had to be a few decent, free city building games out there.

id="more-61297">

ElectroCity

style="text-align: center;">

A simple turn-based Flash game created by New Zealand energy company Genesis Energy to give players young and old a shot at managing a town or city’s growth and impact. Players must pay close attention to the levels of energy used, sustainability and environmental factors.

Players are given 151 turns to alter tax rates, build things, destroy things and generally oversee the planning of a city from an environmental point of view. It is up to you to keep your citizens happy, maintain finances and get the highest score possible out of 100 available points.

If you’re seeking inspiration then there’s plenty of completed cities to gawp at, and you can even save your progress and come back to it at a later point. Remember – it’s all about balance.

IBM CityOne

style="text-align: center;">

A very in-depth city management game that allows you to choose one of four aspects of city life to manage – energy, water, retail and banking. This game also uses a turn-based system which scores you after each turn made.

There’s a fairly chunky registration form to fill out before you can play (which asks for all sorts of intrusive data) but the game itself functions well, especially if you’re a business-minded individual.

Your city starts off sketchy and greyscale, with colour gradually introduced as you implement much-needed change. At times it plays like a big advert for IBM, but remains enjoyable and looks pretty good to boot. Probably not great on slower PCs, especially those with an aversion to resource-heavy Flash.

City Creator

style="text-align: center;">

Not necessarily a simulation or a management game, City Creator simply allows you to do just that – create a sprawling landscape from a set of pre-fabricated buildings and features.

The game features charming pixel art from and an isometric viewpoint, which complements the laid back style of play. Simply drag items from the left hand side of the screen to your city on the right and see what you come up with.

There are 3 building sets to choose from, each with their own unique style. If you register on the site you can save your creations and share them with your friends. If you just want to build a city then City Creator should entertain for a while at least. Be sure to check out their other project Castleford.

Zanpo Virtual Cities

style="text-align: center;">

Lovers of Minecraft and pixel art rejoice in this Flash block-based city building game. Instead of building preset structures and features Zanpo Virtual Cities allows you to build fairly detailed city blocks using individual building pieces.

Users then vote on the best ones, and they get added to the virtual city. This one strikes me a bit like online Lego, and the emphasis is very much on building and not management.

You’ll need to register to build, or you can simply choose a city from the drop down list and click City View and see what everybody else has been building.

CityVille

style="text-align: center;">

I know, I know. You’re sick of FarmVille, so why on earth do you want to hear about CityVille? Well considering there’s already more than 20 million people playing it I figured it would be an injustice to not include it on the list.

If you’re fine with yet another application accessing all your personal data and posting whatever it feels like to your wall then CityVille might appeal. The game is a casual Sim City-esque sim in which you take a humble town and turn it into a sprawling metropolis.

Graphically the game looks awesome, and there’s the added social interactions provided by the Facebook platform. If only it didn’t clog up your feeds, eh?

There are a few more Facebook games, that I’ve left out (it’s quite a saturated market, and Facebook isn’t for everyone).  If you’re interested, they were:

  • Social City
  • Millionaire City
  • Hollywood City

I’ve spent hours of my life toiling over virtual cities in Maxis’ Sim City series, and it must have rubbed off after all these years. I still enjoy meticulously planning infrastructure, zoning and carefully tweaking finances to this day.

The other day whilst trying to work, I accidentally (oops) went looking for some online heirs to the Sim City throne. Despite simple Flash games lacking the depth of even the original Sim City, I guessed there had to be a few decent, free city building games out there.

id="more-61297">

ElectroCity

style="text-align: center;">

IBM CityOne

style="text-align: center;">

City Creator

style="text-align: center;">

Zanpo Virtual Cities

style="text-align: center;">

CityVille

style="text-align: center;">

I know, I know. You’re sick of FarmVille, so why on earth do you want to hear about CityVille? Well considering there’s already more than 20 million people playing it I figured it would be an injustice to not include it on the list.

Making Money Through

Two years into the Obama presidency and the economic data is still looking grim. Don't be fooled by the gyrations of the stock market, where optimism is mostly a reflection of the ability of financial corporations -- thanks to massive government largesse -- to survive the mess they created. The basics are dismal: unemployment is unacceptably high, the December consumer confidence index is down, and housing prices have fallen for four months in a row. The number of Americans living in poverty has never been higher, and a majority in a Washington Post poll said they were worried about making their next mortgage or rent payment.

In a parallel universe lives Peter Orszag, President Barack Obama's former budget director and key adviser, who even faster than his mentor, Robert Rubin, has passed through that revolving platinum door linking the White House with Wall Street. The goal is to use your government position to advance the interests of your future employer, and Orszag and Rubin's actions in the government and then at Citigroup provide stunning examples of the synergy between big government and high finance.

As Bill Clinton's treasury secretary, Rubin presided over the dismantling of Glass-Steagall, the New Deal legislation that would have prohibited the creation of the too-big-to-fail Citigroup. He was rewarded with a $15-million-a-year job at Citigroup, where he became a leader in the bank's aggressive move into high-risk ventures. An SEC report in September claimed that Rubin as Citigroup chairman was aware that the bank failed to disclose $40 billion it held in subprime mortgages before the collapse.

During those years at Citigroup, Rubin financed the Brookings Institution's Hamilton Project, an economic policy program, and named Orszag, a Clinton economic adviser, as its director. The Hamilton Project continued to celebrate Rubin's deregulation philosophy up to the point of utter embarrassment. Clearly, Orszag is not easily embarrassed, for upon taking his new job recently he boasted "I am pleased to be joining Citi, with its unmatched global platform and dedication to providing clients with service and advice."

The most damning comment on this corrupt syndrome was offered by former Citigroup co-chief executive John Reed, who had worked with Rubin to get Glass-Steagall reversed and now is a sharp critic of the result. "We continue to listen to the same people whose errors in judgment were central to the problem," Reed told Bloomberg News. "I'm astounded because we basically dropped the world's biggest economy because of an error in bank management." Reed estimated that the financial deregulation proposals contained in the Dodd-Frank bill and other reforms of the Obama administration represent only 25 percent of the change needed.

The failure to provide serious regulation of the financial industry to avoid future downturns is documented in devastating detail in that Dec. 28 Bloomberg report, written by Christine Harper:

"The U.S. government, promising to make the system safer, buckled under many of the financial industry's protests. Lawmakers spurned changes that would wall off deposit-taking banks from riskier trading. They declined to limit the size of lenders or ban any form of derivatives."

The reason for that failure is obvious from the president's choice of advisers featuring Rubin acolytes from the Clinton years. Harper writes: "While Obama vowed to change the system, he filled his economic team with people who helped create it," referring to, among others, Timothy F. Geithner, who had gone from the Clinton Treasury Department to head the New York Fed, where he presided over the salvaging of Citigroup and AIG. As Obama's treasury secretary he was quick to appoint a Goldman Sachs lobbyist as his chief of staff. Geithner's subservience to Wall Street was reinforced by White House top economic adviser Lawrence Summers, Rubin's deputy and then replacement in the Clinton administration who pushed through the repeal of Glass Steagall and fought against the regulation of derivatives.

And with the decisive assistance from both a Republican and Democratic president, all has worked out just as planned for the banks. Harper reports: "The last two years have been the best ever for combined investment-banking and trading revenue at Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citigroup, Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and Morgan Stanley, according to data compiled by Bloomberg."

It's all wonderfully bipartisan. Recently it was announced that Carlos Gutierrez, commerce secretary under George W. Bush, had been named to a high position at Citigroup. For President Obama, there's no cause for worry about the loss of indispensable talent from his administration. Orszag's replacement as head of the Office of Management and Budget, Jacob J. Lew, was both a member of Rubin's Hamilton Project and a former Citigroup executive -- thus insuring that government of the banks, by the banks, for the banks shall not perish from the earth.

He and several other high-ranking officials in the organization, including GM Jeff Ireland, seemingly traveled cross country because they felt a sense of urgency with talks between Harbaugh and the 49ers becoming serious.

The Dolphins are going to be a tough franchise to battle for the 49ers. They have some of the deepest pockets in the league. People can say whatever they want about the character of a man or what they might do. It's a lot different when a team is offering you more money than most see in a lifetime.

Even if the 49ers can compete with the Dolphins' offer, which was something to the tune of $7 million, Jed York can't compete in a bidding war with Ross, who is in the top 70 richest people in the world.

The 49ers could give Harbaugh the keys to the franchise. They can remind him he is a superstar in the Bay Area. They can feed him lines about the new stadium, where the franchise is headed, the talent, how much they need him, but he's likely to go with whoever pays him.

The sense of urgency has already allowed Harbaugh to see a salary he might not have even dreamed would come his way. Why wouldn't he just sit back and watch the price tag go up. His best bargaining chip right now is that he is a hot commodity.

Forcing teams to feel like they have to give more and more to reel him in is making them do just that. Nobody is backing off yet, and until teams stop throwing incentives at Harbaugh, he should make everyone believe he is highly interested in everyone.

Until teams start to pull back the reigns, the ball is 100 percent in Harbaugh's court. This will be a fun week for Harbaugh, and he shouldn't cut it short by prematurely signing any deals. The Dolphins looked past the fact they have yet to fire head coach Tony Sparano and throwing record money at him before he coaches one professional game. Other teams may come knocking, and even if they don't, Harbaugh is going to be living comfortably, as one of the league's wealthiest and most powerful coaches.

About Making Money

Later today, all of the members of the House and a third of the Senate will be sworn in and the new reality in Washington will officially set in. The initiatives that will roll out of each body in the coming days and weeks will be a radical departure from the Democratic dominance of the past years. However, we expect that the most serious proposals will also be strikingly different from the long list of priorities that existed for both parties during the last two shifts in power. In addition to the Congress, President Obama will begin to reveal selectively his reaction to the new political reality and what his priorities for the next year will look like.

Austerity, Spending Cuts, Deficit Reduction

No matter what wording you choose, the amount of money spent and collected by the federal government, as well as the amount of debt that is sold to cover the shortfall, will be the key driver of the 112th Congress. Several key flash points will arise in the coming months around this issue, which will also demonstrate the new balance of power and personalities in the new Congress.

Continuing Resolution and Rescission of Unspent Stimulus Funds

First, will be the Continuing Resolution that funds the government until March 4 coupled with a vote to increase the debt ceiling. These initial battles will highlight the conflicts of the new Washington reality, as Senate Minority Leader McConnell (R-KY) works to retain party unity -- amidst promised efforts by Senator DeMint (R-SC) to lead opposition to any measures he and other like-minded Senators deem insufficient for reducing spending as well as the size and reach of government. Speaker Boehner (R-OH) and his House Leadership team will face similar issues in keeping the new class of Tea Party-backed freshmen Republicans happy, while attempting to craft legislation that has a chance of passing the Senate. One of the first areas where this dynamic will be at work is with the promised rescissions to already appropriated Federal spending from the Recovery Act (the stimulus).

Potential Grand Bargain on Spending

Other examples of the new reality will be the potential for closer cooperation between moderate Democrats and Republicans in the Senate. One of the key indicators to watch in this regard will be the reaction of other Senators to the introduction, by Mark Warner (D-VA) and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), of the bi-partisan Deficit Commission's findings in statutory language. The release of the President's budget in February may also be an opportunity to outflank Republican Congressional leaders on deficit reduction and there are rumors it will contain cuts to defense spending that would certainly result in clear winners and losers in the sector. Secretary Gates is expected to announce these cuts, thought to be around $100 billion in size, as early as this week after receiving approval from the White House.

Attacks on Obama's Health Care Policy

Second, is health care policy, notably the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). A repeal vote has already been scheduled in the House for January 12, but as we have said before, this will be simply symbolic and the Democratic Senate Leadership has already written to Republican House Leadership saying they will not take up the matter.

The real focus of Republicans, some Democrats, and the key variable in this debate, will be just how much opponents of the ACA will be able to chip away at funding through the Appropriations process and through small bi-partisan deals, such as small business expense reporting on 1099 IRS forms. New Ways and Means Committee Chair Dave Camp (R-MI) has already been making statements to this effect, and he may have a willing partner in Senate Finance Committee Chairman Baucus (D-MT), who attempted to repeal this portion of the ACA in the lame-duck period of the 111th Congress.

Neutering the EPA and FCC Third, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Fred Upton (R-MI) has indicated he will seek to use the Congressional Review Act to prevent the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to enforce new "Net Neutrality" rules.

The biggest variable of all is how the Obama administration will adjust to the new reality

I believe that the President's choice will be driven by the state of the economy. Should the Administration decide that "green shoots" have blossomed, unemployment is falling, and growth is in fact increasing, this will free the President to act in a more moderate and pro-active manner, working alongside the new dynamics in Congress. Rallying his base will be less important and he will be able to garner at least partial credit for economic recovery.

Washington and Wall St.

Indicators of this path include the potential appointment of Bill Daley from JP Morgan Chase as Obama's Chief of Staff and rumors of a deal to reform Social Security along the lines of the Deficit Commission recommendations, as part of a grand compromise to ensure that the debt ceiling is increased and any spending cuts also hit traditional Republican priorities such as defense spending.

An initial move in one direction by the Administration does not necessarily preclude a later shift, should the economic or political situation change. Additionally, no matter what develops in terms of legislation, the Executive Branch agencies and regulators will continue to implement the President's agenda, particularly the ACA and the Dodd-Frank Act. There may be disruptions of the funding needed to fully implement each act, but the rule-writing will continue nevertheless.

Agency Oversight/Investigations Another worry for the agencies besides funding, is the new Chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Darrell Issa (R-CA), who has promised to hold hearings on several topics including: how regulation affects job creation; Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the FHA; as well as the Obama Administration's foreclosure mitigation efforts; the disparate findings of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission; and the FDA's food and drug safety review processes. Responding to these investigations is expected to divert a great deal of attention within Executive Branch agencies towards defending Administration actions and away from implementing new priorities.

Vacancies at Financial Regulators

The rising number of vacancies of key leadership positions at various financial agencies and regulators will also act as a yoke on rule making. Vacancies include the regulator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, theFederal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA); the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC); the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB); the new Office of Financial Research at Treasury; the National Economic Council (NEC); the Federal Reserve Board of Governors; and other lower level but critical positions at the Treasury Department. The longer these positions go unfilled, the more implementation of regulations will be delayed -- a potential point of leverage for Senate Republicans.

The bottom line for the next few weeks and months is that although Republicans will seek to roll back the legislative successes of the first two years of the Obama administration as much as possible, they will make little progress. The Senate holds potential for some bipartisan activity on select issues such as spending and social security, but the focus should be on the President's choice of governing style for the last two years of his term. This, in turn, will define how he runs his reelection campaign.

Capacity vs. Usage

Kepes emphasizes the following financial benefits of Infrastructure-as-a-Service:

  • Economies of scale - IaaS vendors can offer cheaper access to infrastructure by purchasing equipment in bulk.

  • Pay as you go for what you use - With cloud computing, you can pay for what you use, like a utility, instead of investing in a fixed capacity infrastructure that may either exceed or fall short of your organization's needs.

  • Cloud services can be paid for out of the operating expenditures budget - And because computing resources are paid for like a utility, they can be paid for out of the operating expenditures budget instead of capital investments.

Kepes emphasizes the need for organizations to select IaaS vendors that allow them to actually take advantage of these benefits. For example, it's important that customers make sure than billing for cloud services is as granular as possible.

Kepes also looks at issues such as Service Level Agreements, support and compliance. This is the first of a series of free white papers by Kepes. Hopefully we'll see further depth as wall as papers for more advanced practitioners.

Non-profit organizations and passionate individuals have found a slew of creative ways to leverage social media and the Internet to make the world a better place. Online campaigns help provide clean drinking water, food and malaria-preventing bed nets to people who need them.

Creative uses of the web are helping to provide and enhance education. These four projects, for instance, found innovative ways to help build schools through digital campaigns.

1. Epic Change

Epic Change has become a model for raising money using social media. Since 2008, its annual TweetsGiving has asked people to tweet about what they’re thankful for while making a donation. The strategy was so successful that #tweetsgiving became a trending topic on Twitter during the first year’s campaign.

Starting out, the benefactor of TweetsGiving was a school in Tanzania that was founded by Mama Lucky Kamptoni, a passionate local woman who started the school using money she earned from her poultry business (now there are two more benefactors). Epic Change wanted to help her rebuild and expand the school.

The organization also launched To Mama With Love, a website where users can make a donation by creating a “heart space” for a mother they care about. The “heart space” is a collection of photos, videos and words dedicated to that mother. Other people who care about that mother are invited to donate in her honor.

From one of the classrooms that was built using donations from these campaigns, the students now tweet and connect with the rest of the world.

“So often, we hear the stories of children in the so-called ‘developing’ world from the perspective of the media, non-profits or friends who have traveled or volunteered,” explains the Epic Change Blog. “What happens now – when these students can share their own stories, and build relationships with the rest of the world, for themselves? How will the world be different when these children, who live so geographically far away, move into our virtual backyard? What difference will it make in their lives to know that their voices will be heard?”

2. Stillerstrong

When Ben Sitller launched the Stillerstrong campaign on YouTube, Twitter and a branded website, he did it with a video that poked fun at Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong campaign. It was hard to tell if he was kidding.

But the campaign, which sells Stillerstrong headbands and accepts donations by text message and credit card, has raised about $300,000 to help provide temporary schools for Haitians displaced by January’s earthquake. At the time the campaign was announced, the organization and its partners Causecast and the Global Philanthropy Group were expecting each school to cost between $45,000 and $55,000.

3. TwitChange

Instead of auctioning off celebrity memorabilia to support a charity, TwitChange hosts eBay auctions for celebrity Twitter interaction. The donation’s bidders put down to have a celebrity follow them, retweet their tweet, or mention them in an update. The proceeds go to aHomeInHaiti.org, which will use them to build a home and school for children with disabilities in Haiti.

The first auction in September raised $531,640.25. The website instructs us to “stay tuned for the celebrity tweet auction coming this holiday season.”

4. University of the People

Less of a “campaign” than a full-blown effort to democratize education, University of the People provides tuition-free higher education through an online campus.

Since launching last year, the university has accepted about 700 students from 100 different countries to its three- to four-year programs for business and computer science. Recently the university opened computer centers in Haiti so that students with limited Internet access could enroll in its courses.

“I do believe that if we take the millions of people around the world who could not afford going to university and teach them tuition free, we’re not only changing their lives, and their family’s lives, we also change their communities, their countries,” founder Shai Shai Reshef says. “And if we have a lot of them, we will change the world for a better world.”
