Making Money Now

Chris Dixon, co-founder of personalization service Hunch.com, takes a very different approach.

"I believe the (desktop & mobile) web will become increasingly personalized," he told us,

"and it will either be done in an opt-out way - through cookies and behind-the-scenes data trading that is out of the users' control - or it will be done in a way that is fully opt-in and users have full control of their personal information. Hunch is a completely premised on the opt-in, give-users-control approach. It takes longer for our approach to get to critical mass but we think will be worth the wait. All of our deals are and will be opt in.

Rapleaf is opt-out, making available data harvested from all around the Web. (For Rapleaf's side of the story about its practices, see the company's blog.)

This could be an incredible platform for innovation - or it could be a controversial way for marketers to make a quick grab of more information about you than you wish they had. They always had it, but now it's a lot cheaper and easier to get. That should mean that new innovators should be able to build incredible things we'll like - if the market has enough imagination to do more than just go for the crass money grab of direct marketing. Right now there are too few good examples of positive developments of beneficial software, social self-awareness, injustices rooted-out and opportunities discovered thanks to programmatically available personal information. That may or may not change in time.

Rapleaf was reported last month to have raised $15 million more in venture capital.

Capcom’s Smurfs’ Village has officially topped class='blippr-nobr'>Angry Birdsclass="blippr-nobr">Angry Birds as the iPhone’s top-grossing game. Its rise to the top hasn’t been without some controversy, though.

Smurfs’ Village is a game where you control a group of smurfs (yes, those popular miniature blue creatures made popular by the comic and the 1980s cartoon) in order to build a functional village. You can grow crops, build houses, play mini-games and visit your friends’ villages, among other activities. If we had to compare it to another popular game, it would be FarmVille.

One thing that separates it from other top-grossing games though is its price: free. The game costs nothing to download. But the game is indeed the iPhone’s top-grossing app, so where does it make its money?

The answer: in-game purchases. One of the game’s main currencies is the “smurfberry,” which helps speed up activities in the game. Instead of waiting 12 hours to grow watermelons, you can grow them instantly by using one of these berries. Of course, the best way to get your hands on one is to purchase them.

They’re not cheap, either; it costs $4.99 to buy 50 berries, $11.99 to buy 150 berries and a whopping $59.99 to buy a wheelbarrow of 1,000 smurfberries.

While those are some eye-popping prices for an iPhone game, that’s not exactly what’s causing controversy. As Pocket Gamer speculates, a likely reason that Smurfs’ Village has risen to the top is because children are making unwanted smurfberry purchases through the app. As long as someone has used his or her username and password on the iPhone, the user doesn’t have to type it in again for the next 15 minutes to make purchases. With many children impatiently playing this game, they’re likely turning to easy-to-complete in-app purchases of Smurfberries to fuel their village-building obsession.

It’s unclear how many purchases in Smurfs’ Village are inadvertent, but the result is still the same: Capcom’s new game is the new king of the iPhone gaming world. Sorry, Angry Birds.

web internet marketing

Matt Mickiewicz is far from your average 27-year-old. He launched Webmaster-Resources.com in 1999 to educate web developers and help them build their businesses at age 14 and has never really looked back. He partnered with an Australian marketing expert and re-launched the site as Sitepoint.com in 2000, quickly growing it into a profitable multi-million dollar company without any venture capital or outside funding. The site is now ranked #845 in the world in terms of overall web visits according to Alexa web rankings, but that's only a small part of what he's working on today.

Mickiewicz barely finished high school as he was already making more money than his teachers and has since founded two additional highly profitable sites in 99designs.com and Flippa.com. His three sites combined are turning over $20 million in revenue.  With the interest that each business has had in the past year, a conservative combined estimate as to the value of all three companies is about $100 million.

As he prepares to launch his fifth site, Learnable.com, in the first quarter of 2011, Mickiewicz shares his unique insight on being a young entrepreneur, why business school is not for everyone and the excitement around startup costs to launch an Internet company today.

Why did you launch your latest company?
I was really just a hard-core geek if you will in 1996 and was building websites as a hobby. I started doing a lot of web design and development and built my first website on the now-defunct GeoCities platform. But as I was doing research on all of the tools and resources needed to learn web design, I started compiling everything because I realized there was no single resource for this information and I began sharing it with the world.

So on April 1, 1998, I launched Webmaster-Resources.com, and I remember that date specifically because it was the date that the price of a two-year domain name registration dropped from $100 to $70, and considering I was funding this out of my allowance, that $30 made all the difference. I knew I was on to something when within the first six months I was being written about in USA Today, the LA Times and The Washington Post.

Windows Magazine, which at the time had nearly one million subscribers, gave me a full-page write-up and then a column to write. And really quickly, Webmaster-Resources became the leader in the space to help web designers and developers learn design and search engine optimization, tools that nobody else really understood at the time.

You re-launched the site as Sitepoint.com in 1999. Why was that a logical next step?
After about one year, I was offered nearly a half million dollars to sell Webmaster Resources. But I wanted to take it to the next level, and so I partnered with an Internet marketing manager in Melbourne, Australia named Mark Harbottle. We decided to become business partners and we wanted Sitepoint to be a comprehensive resource and community for people in this field. It's been profitable every single month since we launched, and we now have over 300,000 registered web designers. We saw that users wanted the tutorial materials next to their keyboard while doing web development work (this was before many people had double screens).

We were originally able to sell advertising and sponsorship on the site, but when the NASDAQ crashed in 2001, we had to get creative to stay afloat. So we decided to see whether people would pay for a printed version of our most popular tutorial, which was about PHP & MySQL. We used a print-on-demand company to limit our risk and started marketing the book online – and it went on to sell nearly 20,000 copies for $35 each.

In terms of your other businesses, flippa.com and 99designs.com have been great moneymakers and grown quickly. What were the ideas there?
For me, its all about the emails and interactions with my customers. If I go to a conference and someone tells me that they learned how to develop websites on Sitepoint and now they're a CTO at a company earning almost $200,000 a year, that lets me know that I'm doing the right thing. When someone sells a website on Flippa, which we launched in 2009 as a marketplace to buy and sell small websites via auction, that could change their life. Each month, we see nearly $2 million worth of website assets selling on a monthly basis, which is terrific.

With 99designs.com, which was recently awarded the 2010 Webby People's Voice Award for Best Web Service, we have almost $15 million a year flowing through the site and we've completed over 55,000 graphic design projects for big and small brands. It quickly became the leader in crowdsourced graphic design and turned the industry upside down, allowing designers to bid on projects. The American Association of Graphic Design Professionals is quite angry about our existence because we're lowering the barriers to entry, but I simply view it as disruptive innovation. It's really no different than what Expedia did to the travel industry or what eTrade did to stocks.

How did being a young entrepreneur both help and hurt you?
I think I was very naïve early on, but that also meant I didn't know what couldn't be done. I love what business school teaches in terms of the failures of past companies and how not to do things, but I don't have that background. I never would have thought I could create a top ranked website or that we could publish and sell a book without cross selling at Barnes & Noble, Amazon or Borders. We relied solely on our community for that promotion and fulfilled all of the orders ourselves.

I never really felt like my age stopped people from wanting to work with me. I was speaking at conferences and lecturing at universities at 18, and I think that was mainly because web developing and management was a really young industry.

Talk a little about Learnable and why you're starting another website?
When I see a hole in the market, I want to do what I can to create a sustainable solution. Learnable.com is going to be an online marketplace for education that allows people to create and sell an online course. Really, the idea for the site came out of my experience in hiring people and building up our companies. We've found over time that the skills a lot of people are learning and being taught in university or in college, at least in terms of the web, are obsolete. Because of the lengthy amount of time it takes to get textbooks written and through the approval process, and then to be printed and sold, some of the concepts are outdated. So people are learning skills like programming, IT, web design, web development and more over the web. The idea here is to create an online platform that offers students a place to learn about what interests them most, and for teachers to share their knowledge in a live environment. We're excited, and I'm hoping it helps the educational model.

What excites you most about the ability to launch a web enterprise today?
I'm just amazed by the tremendous opportunity ahead of us and am constantly astonished by the abilities of companies like Groupon and Zynga to compete with the massive brands. I mean, to go from nothing to a $1 billion valuation in 2-3 years with the right idea is great. The pace of change for entrepreneurs is rapidly accelerating, and the cost and risk of launching a new business and getting off the ground is just amazing. The ability to gain user feedback really quickly and adapt to what your consumers want is totally different with the web as it is now. But finding a new market, helping people and taking that original idea and turning it into a business is really exciting right now.

Download The Age of Exabytes: Tools & Approaches for Managing Big Data

We are experiencing a big data explosion, a result not only of increasing Internet usage by people around the world, but also the connection of billions of devices to the Internet. Eight years ago, for example, there were only around 5 exabytes of data online. Just two years ago, that amount of data passed over the Internet over the course of a single month. And recent estimates put monthly Internet data flow at around 21 exabytes of data.

Our latest report, The Age of Exabytes, explores how technologies are evolving to address the needs of managing big data, from innovations in storage at the chip and data center level, to the development of frameworks used for distributed computing, to the increasing demand for analytical tools that can glean insights from big data in near real-time. manage personal finances

In the digital age, nobody likes carrying a lot of cash around – I know I don’t, anyway. This can be especially frustrating when you go to keep track of your expenses, who you owe money to, who you lent some to and just where it all goes over the month.

As always, there are a lot of apps out there to help you do various things with your money. There are apps to figure out how to manage your money, oversee expenses, send money to people, keep track of who owes you, and more.

In this article, I’ll show you some of the applications you can take advantage of to do everything I’ve mentioned here, leaving you free to pick and choose the apps that will make your life easier.

id="more-58352">

How to Manage Your Money

I’m beginning to learn just how difficult managing your expenses can be. For the most part, I use my debit card tied to my checking account to make purchases. I use it at the grocery store, when I go out to lunch with my coworkers and on the weekend when I’m out exploring the city.

At the end of the month, my bank statement looks pretty ridiculous. All of these small transactions make it difficult to sift through. I still know what everything is, but if I wanted to see where I could be saving some money I wouldn’t know the first place to look.

Sounds like you? Even if it doesn’t, you could still reap the benefits of visually being able to manage your money. These apps make the process a lot easier.

Mint

style="text-align: center;">

Mint has been on our radar since back in 2007 when Karl wrote about it. Plain and simple, if there is one app I want you to keep in mind it’s this one.

Mint is a free personal finance application that can help you compare your bank accounts, credit cards, CDs, brokerage and 401(k) to the best products out there. It offers a visual representation of your finances and is very easy to set up. Use it to manage your budget, get credit card advice and understand investing.

Here’s a great video showcasing an overview of Mint’s features:

For some helpful tips on how to use Mint, check out Bakari’s article on How To Use Mint To Manage Your Budget & Spendings Online.

Thrive

Thrive (directory app) is also a great application if you’re looking for a simple way to keep track of your spending. With Thrive, you get an overall Financial Health score, which is one number that shows you how financially fit you are. It also shows you scores in other areas and offers you advice on how to make improvements.

style="text-align: center;">

Thrive breaks down your spending for you and shows you where you can save. Compare your current budget to last month’s, as well as view a six month average and target budgets to follow.

Texthog

Looking for an even simpler way to track expenses? Texthog (directory app) lets you easily store, organize and access your receipts, expense reports and more via text message, the web, your email, iPhone and even Twitter.

style="text-align: center;">

A Texthog free account gives one user the ability to track expenses, view unlimited reports and get budget/bill reminders. Take a photo of your receipts and utilize tags and categories to keep track of everything.

To check out Texthog on your iPhone, you can find the application on iTunes.

Venmo

Speaking of text messages, have you heard of Venmo? Venmo (directory app) is a nice little app that lets you pay and charge friends with your phone. Send and receive secure payments by linking your card to your account. This allows you to settle small loans you give/get by eliminating paper transactions for small amounts of money.

style="text-align: center;">

To use Venmo, all you do is create an account. You can then send and receive money to other accounts simply by using text commands in SMS. Accept a “trust” request from your friends and make transactions without having to authorize them by texting a 3 digit code.

This is a pretty solid application that I have been using a lot lately with my friends/coworkers. It’s great for when a bunch of you are out to lunch and not everyone has cash on them. “I’ll just put it on my card and Venmo you all afterwards.”

Owe Me Cash

style="text-align: center;">

Owe Me Cash is a nice app I found recently that is also very easy to use. If someone owes you money, you just sign into Owe Me Cash with your Twitter, Facebook, OpenID, or regular account and tell the app about the debt. The app will send automatic reminders to those that owe you money by phone, text and email, so you can get paid!

This app is more fun than serious, but it doubles as an easy way to keep track of who owes you what. Let the app bug your friends to pay you so you don’t have to do it yourself – it’s a win-win.

Conclusion

With these applications, your finances will never look better. Say goodbye to paper money and change.

What do you think of these money-managing applications? Will you be using any of them?

Have you ever wondered how some bloggers never seem to run out of post ideas? They always manage to escape the dreaded writer’s block unscathed; they’re always full of inspiration. Ideas overflow and pour onto the page as they type feverishly. They’ve tapped into a mystical stream of never-ending stories.

What if I told you that you could tap into the same power?

Everything you’ve already learned and experienced can be used to create infinite and original ideas for your blog. If you can turn on the analytical and creative juices in your brain, you’ll never run out of ideas.

Almost anything you’ve learned in school, on the job—even life’s lessons in general—can be turned into useful analogies or comparisons. Music, television shows, movies, or videos can also be used as fuel for unique and engaging blog posts.

There are almost no limits to this technique. In fact, the more unlikely and unusual the comparisons you make, the better.

Using my personal experience to blog better

Whenever something evokes an “Aha!” moment for me, I immediately think about how I can use that principle for blogging.

For example, late one night, I was watching The Karate Kid. At the point when young Dre finally realizes that all those days and weeks spent picking up his jacket had really been preparing and strengthening him, my mind immediately connected that experience to blogging.

When Mr. Han said, “Kung Fu lives in everything we do … Everything is Kung Fu”, I jumped up like a hot coal had landed in my lap. I grabbed a pen and wrote:

“Blogging lives in everything we do … Everything is blogging! Every experience is potential blogging material!”

My husband thought I was going mad as I frantically scribbled this on an already over-filled piece of paper. It was a major “Aha!” moment!

Yes, everything in my life — even those experiences that I thought were useless wastes of time — had been preparing me for blogging.

You might not be able to see the similarities between blogging and manicuring nails, but what I learned years ago as a nail technician helps me blog better today. I was known for my creative airbrush designs and 3D nail art. I had more customers than I had time. It sounds like I should be rich by now, right?

Here’s the problem: I loved the design/art part of the process, but I hated the chemical aspects of the job. I also hate feet, which wasn’t the best of news for customers who wanted their toes to match their fingers. I suffer from the exact opposite of a “foot fetish.” Would that be a foot phobia? What I learned is that no amount of money justifies doing (or smelling) things you hate.

How does that translate to blogging?

Nothing, not even money, should be the reason for blogging about something you’re not passionate about.

I can see many parallels between applying acrylic nails and blogging.

They both require preparation

When applying acrylic nails, the surface must be adequately prepared. Skimping on this step creates the prime condition for the growth of fungus or other harmful pathogens that, if left untreated, could create medical problems for the customer.

With blogging, if you don’t take adequate time to prepare with research and fact checking, you could potentially steer a reader in the wrong direction. They may not be physically harmed, but advice you offer on your blog could harm a person’s business or their blogging efforts—and maybe even adversely impact their finances.

They Both Require Good Design

If I tried to put a beautiful design on a malformed nail, it only made the malformation more apparent. On the other hand, a well-formed nail with an ugly or bland design would be a waste of sculpting efforts. In other words, the nail had to be both well formed and display a beautiful design.

The same is true for a blog. You can have the most beautiful blog design, but if your site lacks valuable content, no one’s going to want to return. You need both good design and great content.

So you see, yes there is much to learn about blogging from doing nails. There is much to learn about blogging from everything—from all of your experiences.

Over to you

Have you ever thought about how your own abundance of personal experiences relates to your own niche? And how you can use that to create a blog unlike any other?

  1. Start by listing some of the most vivid experiences you’ve had, or lessons you’ve learned over the years.

  2. Then instead of thinking about how different they are from blogging, think about how similar they are.

  3. Use those points of intersection to highlight those similarities.

  4. Then mesh those ideas together to create something new.

What you’ll get is something totally unpredictable and extremely insightful.

Which pieces of your personal experience and life lessons could you use to create an interesting analogy or comparison in a blog post? Which could you use to help you improve your blogging in general?

Help Making Money

If you’re an online publisher running a website that relies on ad revenues—whether it’s a blog or an entertainment website—it can sometimes be complex to get started and to find new ways to make more money from your ads.

As I’ve previously written, we’re committed to helping online publishers—large and small—“find the advertising gold hidden within their sites,” so they can fund their websites and online content. At the core of these efforts—as it has been for more than seven years—is AdSense, which now has more than 2 million publishers in more than 200 countries who use it to fund great online businesses.

Over the last few years, we’ve invested significantly in improving AdSense so that it provides the best solution to help all publishers make the most money possible from online advertising. We’ve added a range of new ad formats (including video and rich media), improved our publisher filters, enabled better targeting that drives higher returns (like remarketing and above-the-fold targeting) and introduced increased competition for publishers’ ad space by bringing in additional advertisers and certified ad networks.

To continue helping our publishers, today we’re excited to be rolling out a completely new AdSense interface to all of our AdSense publishers, globally, in more than 30 languages and in each of the 200+ countries where AdSense is available. The AdSense interface is how publishers set up, manage, optimize and see reports on the ads on their sites.

With this new interface, AdSense is even easier to use, and we’re also providing publishers with all the tools they need to manage and increase their advertising revenue. We used lots of direct feedback from our publishers to make this overhaul. If you’re an online publisher, it helps you in three main ways:

Olbermann Suspended Without Pay From MSNBC After Making Political Donations To Democrats

Today, Politico reported that MSNBC host Keith Olbermann made political contributions to three Democratic candidates — Kentucky senate candidate Jack Conway and Arizona House members Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords. Following the story, MSNBC President Phil Griffin released a statement this afternoon stating that Olbermann has been suspended without pay:

I became aware of Keith’s political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay.

MSNBC’s policies governing its employees states:

Anyone working for NBC News who takes part in civic or other outside activities may find that these activities jeopardize his or her standing as an impartial journalist because they may create the appearance of a conflict of interest. Such activities may include participation in or contributions to political campaigns or groups that espouse controversial positions. You should report any such potential conflicts in advance to, and obtain prior approval of, the President of NBC News or his designee.

It’s unclear what harm Griffin determined resulted from Olbermann’s contributions. Politico noted that Olbermann donated to Grijalva on the same day that Grijalva appeared as a guest on his show. In his defense Olbermann said, “I did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns, nor to any others in this election or any previous ones, nor have I previously donated to any political campaign at any level.”

Atrios reports that Pat Buchanan, a very frequent guest on MSNBC and an official contributor, has also made a number of donations to Republican candidates.

Meanwhile, Steve Benen observes that, while Olbermann made his donations in a personal capacity, News Corp. — Fox News’ parent company — “made multiple undisclosed donations to the Republican Governors Association, totaling at least $1.25 million, in addition to a $1 million contribution to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for its pro-Republican election-year activities. Fox News has helped GOP candidates raise money on the air; Fox News personalities are featured guests at Republican fundraisers; while other Fox News personalities continue to help generate financial support for Republican candidates now, even after the elections.”
